Dear Mokena 159 Families,

Children are the first priority in Mokena School District 159. Their well being and the well being of our staff are paramount to us. The recent tragedy that occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas is a reminder to us all that we must remain vigilant about safety and security at all times.

The Mokena Police Department and Mokena School District 159 are partners in maintaining the safety and security of our public schools. Annually the school district conducts safety drills with our first responders to ensure our readiness in the event of an emergency. This includes law enforcement drills, shelter-in-place drills, fire drills, and bus evacuation drills. Students and staff are trained on the actions to take in the event of an active shooter situation. The Mokena Public Schools follow the recommended response plan from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security known as Run-Hide-Fight. The District’s Safety and Crisis Plan is also reviewed annually by first responders.

Reacting to an emergency is not as effective as preventing one entirely. Mokena School District 159 is committed to supporting the mental and behavioral health of its students. Each school implements a social and emotional learning curriculum which encourages students to reach out if they need help. We also encourage our students to contact an adult if they observe behavior that concerns them. The District has a form on its website that allows students to anonymously report concerning behavior to the administration. You may find that form here. You may also reach out to the Administrative Office of the Mokena Police Department by calling (708) 479-3912 if you have any concerns. If you see something that doesn't seem quite right, say something. By being alert we can protect our students, staff, families, neighbors, and community.

Mokena School District 159 and the Mokena Police Department thank you for your continued support. It is the partnerships within our community that make the Village of Mokena a great place to raise a family. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mark Cohen, Superintendent of Mokena School District 159

Brian Benton, Chief of Police for the Village of Mokena
