We are Mokena proud of 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Janes, for her newly published book! Congratulations on this amazing accomplishment!

Kindergarten students enjoyed a field trip to Pilcher Park where they learned how maple syrup is made. They were able to experience how trees are tapped, how sap is collected, and how the sap is boiled to create syrup. As a grand finale, students were able to enjoy some pancakes and maple syrup!
This field trip provided a unique and real life experience related to their reading and writing unit about how living things depend on trees for their needs!

Friendly reminder, tomorrow is an early dismissal day!

Save the date for the junior high musical!

1st grade has begun their ELA module all about birds! Each classroom hangs a bird feeder on the window so students can see the bird features they are learning about up close. Today, Mrs. Arduino's class had its first visitor!

Two of our 1st grade classrooms are also piloting new social studies materials. Mrs. Macie's class has been learning about how to use a compass rose to determine directions, read a map key, and use a map. Each student also created a classroom map based on what they learned. Today they went on a treasure hunt throughout MES using clues that involved the directions on the compass rose!

Mokena School District will be hosting a blood drive on February 5th. You can make a donation appointment by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or by visiting RedCrossBlood.org.

MES kindergarten students are learning about living and nonliving things. Today students observed a plant and discussed if a plant is living or nonliving.

MES students in the Early Start and Early Childhood Preschool programs came back to school today for an open-gym playdate. Students were able to meet new friends in different classes and parents were able to mingle and get to know each other.

Third grade students went on a "poster walk" this week as a way to activate background knowledge about how different types of frogs survive. In small groups, students observed pictures and read text exerpts on posters and then shared their inferences about each.
